The ‘Isidor Todoran’ Doctoral School of Theology. As part for the Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, the Faculty of Orthodox Theology offers its students a complete theological education (at all 3 levels of study) attuned to the needs of present-day society. From an administrative point of view, the Faculty of Orthodox Theology has a relatively recent history, as it was re-established after 1989 within a wide-ranging programme to restore religious education. The ‘Isidor Todoran’ Doctoral School of Theology, found among the BBU Doctoral Schools was created in 1994. The first professor was Prof. Rev. Fr. Ioan I. Ică Sr., Ph.D., who transferred from the ‘Lucian Blaga’ University in Sibiu, was the first professor to teach the 10 doctoral students; his appointment was approved by Order of the Minister of Education no. 3854/1995 (he had gained the right to supervise doctoral dissertations as early as 1984).

In 1996 was organized the first entrance exam for the Theology doctoral programme was organised at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of Cluj-Napoca. In 1998, the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Cluj-Napoca held the first doctoral thesis defence (archdeacon Ioan I. Ică Jr., lecturer) Anexa 2.1.1 Dovezi Școala Doctorală. Up until 1999, according to the laws in force at that time, the doctoral studies were also coordinated by tenured professors from the University of Bucharest, such as:

  • Rev. Fr. Dumitru Radu, Ph.D., Moral Theology, Ascetics and Social Ethics,
  • Rev. Fr. Emilian Popescu, Ph.D., History of the Romanian Orthodox Church and Byzantine Studies. In 2001 Prof. Emilian Popescu, a consulting professor, transferred from the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest to the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Cluj-Napoca, where he supervised doctoral dissertations (having gained this right in 1978) until 2002, when he transferred to the ‘Dumitru Stăniloae’ Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the ‘Alexandru Ioan Cuza’ University in Iași.

  • Rev. Fr. Vasile Gordon, Ph.D., specialization: Homiletics and Catechesis (he was granted the capacity of ‘doctoral supervisor’ through the Minister’s Order no. 4807/ August 17, 2005 at the ‘Justinian Patriarhul’ Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Bucharest; he transferred to Cluj-Napoca in 2013.

In 2007 – according to the new legislation in force – the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Cluj-Napoca was created in its present form and it was named after Prof. Rev. Fr. Isidor Todoran.
